My past self-harming behavior and experience of eating disorder led me think about the origins of mental illness. In the Freudian psychoanalytic theory, we have both Live Drive and Death Drive, the latter one is a drive for death and destruction, usually expressed through actions such as attack and self destruction. Inspired, I created this series not only to deepen my self-recognition and find self-reconciliation, but also to establish a new understanding towards death. I used gears as an important component in my animation. They’re always hidden beneath the surface, but they’re also the core engines that make machines work. Different gears work together in sequence; each one implicated with another. Similarly, our drive for survival or death is also hidden deep within us; various ideas collectively motivate our external behavior. My animation means to use the changing sense of spatial visualisations to guide the audience into deeper space while also simulating a deeper level of intellectual and psychology exposure.
